How to Sing Like Lewis Capaldi?
Lewis Capaldi is known to have a raw distorted voice that with the right practice, you too can develop without actually harming or hurting your vocal chord.
The raw and distorted sound that Lewis Capaldi is known for is achieved by the method of Constriction.
Many vocal coaches during singing lessons might have warned you the dangers of constricting, it can interfere with the tone of the music and if it is overused it can cause strain for your voice.
But if this constriction is done correctly, it can give you that gritty and raspy sound capable of evoking emotions from any member of your audience.
In the case of Lewis, he is known to constrict his aryepiglottic sphincters.
There are three main vocal tract sphincters and they are the false fold, the vocal fold and the aryepiglottic sphincters.
What lewis is doing is to sing as normally as possible while still constricting the aryepiglottic Sphincter causing the vibration of the cartilage around the area.
To be able to sing like him you need to learn how to constrict that aryepiglottic sphincter as well.
While the false fold and the vocal fold will produce vibration normally, the aryepiglottic sphincter when constricted will also provide secondary vibrations that will ultimately make the voice unique.
Some steps needed to sing like Lewis Capaldi include :
- Constricting your vocal cord to get that grit and raspy distortion tone that Lewis Capaldi is known for. If you feel any form of discomfort when practising, I will advise you to stop right away, give yourself some time, then start again. Since your vocal chord is not used to this, you can start by doing some voice warm-ups, then go for the Big Coughs that will give your vocal chord some vibrations, as you are starting newly, do not do it for more than 30 minutes and give your voice rest three times a week.
- Learn how to Flip your voice from a normal singing voice to a falsetto, learn how to emphasize emotions or subtlety. The falsetto is the register just above your voice and tends to be airier, this is used in covering the frugality of the moment.
